WARREN MCDONALD – LESSONS FROM THE

GROUND UP

The wheelchair glided effortlessly across the room, sturdy hands pushed the large mountain bike tires and maneuvered it through the different rehab machines scattered across the room.

“Hey mate, I’m Warren Mcdonald” his hand extended to shake mine.

His strong confident handshake already told me what kind of man he is.

We met at GF Strong rehabilitation centre in Vancouver Canada where I learned how to walk with my prosthetic leg after an elective amputation of my right leg below the knee.

Warren lost both his legs above the knee in a horrific climbing accident in Australia and came to visit us as a peer visitor – a fellow amputee that can share the journey with us ‘fresh amputees’ trying to figure out what to do next.

Warren’s survival, recovery and return to life after his accident is usually described as inspirational but knowing him today, I can say that he represents the human spirit at its best.

Riddled with challenges, big questions about life, meaning, purpose and everything day to day throw at him, Warren had to find his “New Normal”.

Life without legs presented him with a new challenge.

In today’s podcast he reflects back on his amputee journey and shares why he believes he prepared for this challenge his entire life.
